Salt Bath?

Message Board / Forum > Frequently Asked Goldfish Questions > Salt Bath?

Hi! I just had some questions on 'salt baths' for fish. I'm hoping maybe someone could help with them..
My 1st is, how do you do the salt bath
My 2nd is, what specific dieases/cuts can you do this for?
3. Can you do this in additon to using a medication?
4. Can you do salt bathes, whena fish is in medicated water and then put him back in the medicated water?
5. How often should you do this or just once?

No offense, but I have to question Ranchugirl's salt dosages. She says 1 teaspoon per gallon or 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons. There are 3 teaspoons in one tablespoon so to maintain the same dosage level, her numbers can't be correct. Yes/No?

Actually, I have learned quite a few things from the puregold goldfish site, and adjourned goldfish list. Its founded by Ingrid Buxton, as well as JoAnn Burke, being in the business of goldfish treating and finding new simple medications for over 20 years now. Here is the exact dosage and article about the salt baths and treatments....smile.gif

I use salt for a lot of treatments myself, and go either with the 1 tbs per 5 gl, or for my bigger tanks and ponds, 1 lb per 100 gl....smile.gif

being that salt dips effects on fishs osmoregulation is logarithmic, the exact dosage isnt as important as one would think. but, its good to have the guidelines to follow so as to not grossly overdose. i think that ranchugirls suggestions in the article are basic and simplistic so that measuring salt dosages dosent become a tedious chore.

also, if you really wanted to be as precise as possible, the truest way to measure the amount of salt additions is to go by weight, not volume. that is because there is quite a lot of variation in the sizes of salt crystals and airpockets that are apparent when using measuring spoons.

When I dip my goldies, I use one half cup salt to one gallon water. Seems pretty effective..
